Driver Education

Driver Education

Our Driver Education Program is dedicated to developing safe, responsible, and confident drivers. The program emphasizes positive driving attitudes, defensive driving skills, and appropriate responses to hazards, following the Virginia Driver Education Standards of Learning.

Behind-the-Wheel Training

The behind-the-wheel portion of instruction is regulated by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and upholds high-quality standards and teaching principles. All CCPS instructors follow official VDOE policies and guidelines to ensure every student receives quality, safety-focused driver training.

Learner’s Permit Test

Students can now take the Virginia DMV Learner’s Permit Test at their school.
To be eligible, students must be at least 15 years and 6 months old.

Steps to Complete the Process

  • Register for the test (using Internet Explorer 9 or higher, or Safari).
  • Provide a parent email address for confirmation, test results, and updates.
  • Prepare in advance by studying the Virginia Driver’s Manual and taking practice tests online.
    • Note: Schools cannot provide read-aloud accommodations. Students requiring this must schedule directly with the DMV.

On the Test Date

Students must bring:

  • A printed and parent/guardian-signed DTS 41 Parent Consent Form
  • Picture ID (such as a school ID)
  • Charged Chromebook and/or charger
  • Optional headphones for audio testing

After passing, students will receive a test receipt, which must be taken to the DMV along with required documents.

Behind-the-Wheel

The Behind-the-Wheel portion is the final step of the licensing process.
To participate, students must have completed the classroom Driver Education course, including the 90-Minute Parent/Teen program.

Current 10th graders enrolled in Driver Education may sign up if they maintain an A or B average at the end of the first nine-week grading period. However, please note that these students will not complete the classroom portion until the end of the first semester.

Behind-the-Wheel training is conducted before or after school by a certified instructor.
The program runs for seven days and may include some Saturday sessions. Services are offered year-round, ensuring flexible scheduling for students.

Registration Requirements

  • A valid Learner’s Permit
  • A Driving Log showing a total of 45 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours at night
(It’s recommended that students have 10–15 hours of experience before starting Behind-the-Wheel. The full log does not need to be complete before registration.)
  • PPF-25 Parent Permission Form for the 180-Day Provisional Driver’s License
  • Signed In-Car Driver Education Enrollment Form
